MOC of the Week: McLaren 720S

When McLaren replaced the 650S with the 720S in 2017, it didn’t just raise the numbers — it changed the way a McLaren looked. The double-skin front fenders and “eye socket” headlight design, borrowed in spirit from the McLaren F1, gave the 720S a face unlike anything else on the road. Under that bodywork sits a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 710 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque, enough to send it from 0-60mph in under three seconds on the way to a 212mph top speed. It remains one of the defining supercars of the last decade — which makes it exactly the kind of car this hobby exists to recreate.

This week’s feature is our McLaren 720S, a 1:8 scale, 3,658-piece build that’s one of the most feature-dense sets in the range.

What makes this build stand out

At 58cm in length, the 720S is a serious centrepiece rather than a shelf-filler. The build includes:

  • Remote-controlled drive and steering, so the model isn’t just a display piece — it actually drives.
  • Electric air suspension, adjustable for ride height, paired with heavy-duty shock absorbers that hold up under the model’s own weight.
  • Electric doors, echoing the real car’s dihedral design.
  • Limited edition black rims and chrome accents, plus a full aero pack that carries over the aggressive stance of the real thing.

The fully developed drivetrain underneath is what separates a display model from a build like this one — every part of what makes the 720S look ready to move is backed by mechanics that actually let it move.

Why it’s this week’s pick

The 720S has been one of the strongest performers in our entire catalogue since launch — it’s a build people search for by name, come back to, and recommend to other builders. If you’ve been circling it, this is your sign.
